Iraq Awards Studies for Top Reservoirs
18 January 2005
Iraq’s oil ministry has awarded contracts for reservoir studies at its giant Kirkuk and Rumaila oil fields to UK major BP and UK-based Exploration Consultants Ltd. (ECL), a senior Iraqi official said Friday.
Royal Dutch/Shell will also play a supporting role to the oil ministry on the Kirkuk study under a technical service agreement, the official added — which will include the Anglo-Dutch major financing that field’s reservoir work.
ECL came out as the big winner in the tender, which was first issued in June. It was shortlisted in November for both studies and was chosen Friday to conduct both the Kirkuk reservoir study and front-end data management work for Rumaila, before BP takes over the second stage of the…

Iraq Sets Up Reservoir Data Center as Studies Get Under Way
18 February 2005
Iraq’s oil ministry has launched its first reservoir study center, as it gears up to work with international companies BP, Exploration Consultants Ltd. (ECL) and Royal Dutch/Shell on landmark reviews of its key Rumaila and Kirkuk oil fields, according to an Iraqi oil official.
The center, established by the ministry’s reservoirs and field development department, is the first in Iraq, and has already been equipped with workstations and computers donated by an oil company. The ministry is now waiting for the delivery of software to enable its staff to conduct reservoir studies on their own, the official said.
“By midyear our staff will be able to combine their knowledge of field reservoir performance with the latest technology and conduct reservoir…

Two Years On, Iraq Output Still Struggling
9 March 2005
Almost two years after the US-led war ousted the Baath regime, Iraq is still struggling to meet prewar production levels at its dilapidated oil fields.
Iraq’s southern oil fields, which accounted for the majority of prewar production of 2.8 million barrels per day, are currently managing just 1.85 million b/d — and even this rate is causing great distress to reservoirs, Iraq’s interim Oil Minister Thamer al-Ghadban said Tuesday.
Iraq’s oil ministry has been allocated a $3 billion budget in 2005 to restore former production and raise levels by developing producing fields. However, that budget is contingent on oil revenues, which have been cut by at least one-third over the past year due to sabotage. Iraqi export levels have fallen…

Firms Line Up to Give Iraq Free Services
14 April 2005
The pending appointment of a new government in Iraq — the third since September 2003 — appears unlikely to open the doors to large investments by international oil companies, although the drawing up of a constitution later this year may take them one step closer.
But that’s not deterring firms from getting a foot in the door, with some 29 companies signing memorandums of understanding (MOU) with the Iraqi oil ministry to date, offering services from abroad for free, Iraqi sources say.
“From the companies’ point of view, it’s a preinvestment,” a senior Iraqi oil official told International Oil Daily from Baghdad Wednesday. “If they are asked for advice on a specific field, they can use the knowledge they accumulate…
